After a couple of months without taking my camera out, I finally managed to get out for the shoot. Well, nothing fancy, just a quick outing to the Peak District to explore places where I can shoot for my ongoing project, Magatta Ki. I’m always trying to find new places I haven’t been before, and I realised I had never wandered into the small forest under the Curbar Edge. Curbar Edge is a popular spot for walkers with fantastic views, and I have quite a few pictures from the top. This time I wanted to see if there was any crookedness under the edge.
I walked the path towards the forest but couldn’t see any potential shots. The forest was not too dense and the trees were nice and straight. Not at all what I was looking for. I have stopped a few times and composed myself just to abandon it a couple of minutes later. I have loaded my holders with expired Ilford FP4 film.

This was the first shot. I’m not sure if I like it. It’s probably too busy, and I should get closer to the bent branches. I don’t think this one will go into the portfolio. It’s often difficult to find the right composition in the forest. It looked a bit different in my mind. I tried to frame the crooked part with branches in the foreground, but I’m not sure if it’s working.
Second Shot
For the second shot, I chose the tree growing out of the rock. Although it does not look like it, there was not much space to work with around the rock. I did my best, but I scratched my legs in the process. Again, a shallow depth of field does not help, in my opinion. That branch in the foreground is a distracting element and the photo will probably benefit more without it.

Conclusion
Well first of all I need to say, what a great trip this was! It’s great to be out with the camera again. Although I did not make any “great” shots I still enjoyed scouting the location a lot. This forest is quite a big one and I explored maybe 5% of it. For sure I’ll be back for more tree hunting. Stay tuned
