I own 3 Eliot Porter’s books . In this short article I will try to do a short review of all three of them. Let’s start with another review.
Book Title: Eliot Porter
Author: Eliot Porter
Published by: New York Graphic Society Books. Little, Brown and Company, Boston . first edition 1987

This book is both an art book and a photographic retrospective. It presents a powerful overview of Porter’s career and highlights his influence on modern nature photography. The book combines beautiful images with historical context. It also includes environmental themes, making it an important work for readers interested in photography, art, and the natural world. If you never heard of Porter and you never seen any of his work this book is for you.
A central theme of the book is the beauty and diversity of the natural world. Porter’s photographs capture forests, rivers, birds, and landscapes with remarkable color and detail. His images show nature not only as scenery but as a living, complex system full of subtle patterns and textures.
Rather than focusing only on dramatic landscapes, Porter often photographs quiet moments in nature. These moments might include leaves, tree bark, or birds in their habitats. He invites readers to appreciate the smaller elements of the environment.

Format is great and so is print, At the beginning of the book is Foreword by M.A.Sandwiess followed by text by Eliot Porter summarizing his whole carrier. Great read. I love this book. If you want to own only one of Porter’s books, I would recommend going for this one!
Book Title: The West
Author: Eliot Porter
Published by: New York Graphic Society Books. Little, Brown and Company, Boston . first edition 1988
The West (1988) is a photography book that presents a visual exploration of the landscapes of the American West. Eliot Porter captures deserts, canyons, rivers, plants, and wildlife through vivid color photographs. He shows the natural beauty and diversity of western environments.
This one is an interesting book. Porter focused on both large landscapes and small details. He highlighted rock textures, desert plants, and patterns in the land. I love how you can see in his work unique character of the western wilderness and its fragile ecosystems.

This book is a great example of the environmental landscape photography and I return to it quite often. I really think this book should be part of each library of the landscape photographer
Book Title: “In Wildness Is the Preservation of the World”
Author: Eliot Porter
Published by: Sierra Club 1962 – Ballantine Book
In Wildness Is the Preservation of the World is a nature photography book. It combines colour photographs by Eliot Porter with selected writings from the American naturalist Henry David Thoreau. The book presents detailed images of forests, plants, birds, and seasonal landscapes, mainly from the woods of New England.

The photographs are carefully paired with Thoreau’s quotations about wilderness and the relationship between humans and nature. Together, the images and text highlight the beauty, mystery, and importance of preserving natural environments.

Overall, the book celebrates the value of wild landscapes and encourages readers to appreciate and protect nature. It became a well-known early example of a large illustrated “nature photography” book. It helped raise public awareness about environmental conservation.
This is such a great book. Its small format makes it really handy. I can take it with me anywhere when I travel. Truly beautiful, I especially love the combination of Thoreau’s texts and the images. Recommended? Definitely
Conclusion
In all honesty I think it feels like Eliot Porter is quite underrated today. Not sure why it’s that. Maybe his pioneering use of color in nature photography has become so common. Many forget he helped make it possible. His quiet, intimate landscapes and meticulous studies of nature shaped both environmental awareness. He also contributed significantly to fine-art color photography. However, his influence is often overshadowed by more widely celebrated names like Ansel Adams. Saying all that I am really happy I do own his books, they are really beautiful. If you are looking for inspiration and haven’t discovered Porter’s work, don’t hesitate to check it out. You won’t be disappointed.
