Photographer’s Library – Magnum Generation(s)

I believe every person who have keen interest in photography knows what Magnum agency is. Right?

From the Magnum website:

Two years after the apocalypse of the Second World War, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, and David “Chim” Seymour came together to found Magnum Photos. The conflict marked each of them deeply. It left them with a profound relief that the world had survived and an urgent curiosity to see what remained. Driven by these shared impulses, they set out to build an agency on their own terms. They founded Magnum in 1947. The agency reflected their independent natures as individuals and as photographers. As a result, Magnum embodied a distinctive blend of reporter and artist. This approach continues to define the organization. Ultimately, Magnum emphasizes not only what is seen, but also the perspective from which it is viewed.

Magnum (Generations)

In 2025  french publisher Caurette and Magnum Photos, announced a Kickstarter whose goal was the release of Magnum Generation(s). Graphic novel regaling the true and fascinating stories behind its founding. I did not hesitate and backed the project right away.

Magnum Generation(s) is a 185-page graphic novel. It weaves illustration with authentic Magnum photographs. Developed in close collaboration with Magnum Photos, the project expands its scope by featuring a carefully curated portfolio of 73 images. Each image comes from one of the agency’s renowned photographers. Together, they offer a representative overview of Magnum’s legacy and a cohesive reflection of its diverse artistic voices.

“If your pictures aren’t good enough,
you’re not close enough.”

Robert Capa

The Book

Mgnum Genertion(s) book is hardcover bound size of A4 and all I can say ,its awesome. From the first page it’s evident that authors tried to stay true to to Magnum spirit. Blending comics and archival photography in a way that it does justice to the legacy of the agency.

As you know with Kickstarter it sometimes a lottery and product can be delayed or experience issues with productions or any other problems. What I have to say about the book? It is pleasure to read. Beautiful illustrations and facts about famous photographs .

Second part of the book is Portfolio, which is essentially the gallery of photos by every member of the agency. I am sure you will fine few of your favourites there is you are familiar with photojournalism .

The last chapter is called ‘Nothing but Chanpagne’ and its a beautiful story about Magnum photo agency by Clara Bouveresse.

To conclude this short review I just say, If you are photographer interested in history of the medium , go for this book. You will not regret it. Magnum Generation(s) has a firm place in my library now.
